How to Store + Organize your Holiday Decor

I know, I know.  The holidays aren’t even over yet.  My goal is always to help you stay one step ahead.  One way to do that is to do the hard work in advance to save you time and energy later.  Most of us give little thought to strategically storing seasonal items so that the next time we need them we know exactly where to look.

So let’s get you in that habit today before you put away this year’s holiday decorations.

Practice Makes Perfect

Learning how to store holiday decorations is a great way to practice home organizing.  Why? Because you can leverage the universal principles of organizing, but with a confined space and a finite number of items.  All your holiday decor goes into storage at the same time and comes back out again 10 months later.  It’s a way to get into the habit of planning ahead, which does take practice!  Listen, friend, if you can do this then, you can tackle any...

Don’t Get Fresh with Me

What’s the toughest thing to keep organized on a daily basis for you?  If you said “OMG, my fridge,” you are not alone, friend. Fridges are challenging: items are being placed in and then taken out again by everyone in your household pretty much all the time.

With all of this activity, its inevitable that some items get hidden, ignored, and wasted.  You know that sad half of an onion in your produce bin? And that bunch of cilantro that you had every intention of making cilantro-lime rice with but is now wilty and gooey hidden in some corner?  Yeah, me, too!

I see it often in my client’s fridges, but also in my own.  I always go through my fridge the night before garbage day to throw out food that went bad.  The wasted food and money is SUCH a bummer.

How can we keep from wasting so much?  I’ve got three ideas to share that helped to dramatically reduce our food waste and keep us organized:

The Truth About Hiring a Professional Organizer

I know so many women who want to hire a professional organizer, but either don’t know where to start or think it is out of reach for them. So today, I’m debunking some of the myths around hiring a professional organizer and giving you some pro-tips to help you in the process.

Hiring a Professional Organizer:
Myths Debunked

MYTH: Only the rich and famous can hire a professional organizer.

TRUTH: Hiring a professional organizer can seem out of reach, luxurious, or even frivolous.  Thankfully, you don’t have to be a Kardashian to benefit from professional organizing services! Most modern professional organizers work with all different budgets, and in homes (or apartments) of all sizes.

MYTH: My house is too messy to let you in! I need to clean and organize it first!

TRUTH: It’s extremely common to feel embarrassed about the current state of your house, no matter how messy it really is. Without seeing anyone else’s mess, most...

An Intervention of a Most Surprising Kind

Hello Grid + Glam friends!  My name is Briggs and I am the COO of Grid + Glam.  In my recent conversations with Corinne, it became clear to both of us that I had a message to send to you, her loyal readers, regarding the surprising impact Corinne has had on me of late.  She provided an intervention I didn’t even know I needed. Let me start from the beginning.

IN THE BEGINNING . . .

As a child, I was so, so easy.  It was easy to be easy. I pleased my parents, I pleased my teachers, I pleased my friends, siblings, and babysitters. Everyone.  It didn’t matter if I wanted to do what I was told or not, because the feeling I got from making others happy superseded any satisfaction I would have gotten from charting my own path (or so I believed).  It also reduced the times I experienced those awful feelings of causing disappointment or (gasp!) anger in someone else. I just could NOT handle being the object of someone’s anger.

As an adult, I...

OMG! I'm Turning 40!

I’m turning 40 at the end of this month and I kind of can’t believe it.  So here’s the deal, friend.  I sat down to write a post that somehow weaves organizing into lessons on turning 40 because I know most of you are here for organizing advice.  But I promised myself that when I turned 40 I would stop doing things just to please others.  So it starts now. And right now I don’t feel like writing about organizing.

I feel like writing about how through determination, grit, and a lot of mistakes, I have created a life that I’m super proud of.   As a mom of two little ones, I reflect a lot on the life I am creating for them, and also on my own childhood. I won’t bore you with the details of the jagged line that brought me to where I am today.  I don’t feel like sharing too much of the suffering . . the journey . . . the healing. But I will share with you the five big lessons I learned.  And five promises...

Inside my Head(Quarters)

I launched Grid + Glam at the beginning of 2018 and couldn’t have dreamed that by the end of the year I would need a dedicated headquarters to run the business.  The business started with a couple of clients a month and quickly gave way to a hectic schedule where I worked during every available moment, including nights and weekends.

In order to reduce my working hours without compromising the quality of my client service, I knew I had to quickly expand my team and spend less time working on Grid + Glam’s daily functions myself. And that team needed a dedicated headquarters.   Since I know that an organized and beautiful room creates a calm mind, I needed to set up my office accordingly, and create a space designed for a CEO and her team.

While completing this project, I was thinking about you all.  Wouldn’t this project be the perfect way to show how I do what I do?  To let you get inside my head from the start of a project to...

CRUSHING your Roadblocks

Most of my clients have at least a little anxiety around organizing. Some have anxiety around the process of getting organized.  And for others, it is anxiety around their ability to stay organized (and for some, it’s of course, both). Research tells us that clutter can cause stress and anxiety.  But what happens if the process of becoming organized also stresses you out?

After working with countless clients, I have distilled their anxieties into six main roadblocks.   I’m going to address each, and provide you with new ways to overcome them.

Roadblock 1: You feel overwhelmed because you’re thinking about your entire house and life and every single thing that needs to get organized.

Break. It. Down.  Here’s a little nugget of truth for you: I get overwhelmed when I go to a new client’s home! My mind races with everything that needs to get done. But, letting that overtake me doesn’t help. I have to remind myself to...

Springtime Bonding

Finally, FINALLY spring is here!  The snow has melted away, and I've put away my heaving winter coat.  As the seasons change, I like to (read: make myself) look inward and examine any routines or habits that I might need to change to ensure I’m living my best life.  Sounds pretty tedious . . . but, it’s true.

No surprise to anyone, I can't get into a good headspace without first having a clean and organized physical space.  This means accomplishing not only my routine resets, but also my seasonal resets.  In addition, if I’m running a Bootcamp, I try to accomplish the Bootcamp tasks before I launch it to make sure that each task is doable for everyone participating. So . . . I began my spring cleaning reset.  I won’t spoil the Bootcamp by sharing too many details here, but I got a lot done! My house is ready for spring and looking beautiful, and my garage and lawn are pristine!

Is it weird that I get a little high when I...

Game Changers

During the Grid + Glam February Organizing Bootcamp, a client asked about my "Game Changers" - things that have revolutionized how I get and stay organized.  I answered the question in the closed Facebook Group, but also wanted to share it with you here. I’ve broken them into two categories: organizing game changers and routine game changers. I hope some of these ideas will help you on your journey to becoming the most organized person you know!

Organizing Game Changers:

  1. I have less stuff.  I have always been very organized, but it took me a YEAR to get to the level I’m at now.  And, during that year, I got rid of a lot of stuff, including the “I may need this some day” things, the “I can’t let go of this yet” things, and the “but I spent money on this, I can’t just throw it away” things.  Over time, I let ALL of that go. It was liberating, and so helpful. Because the less you have, the easier it is to...
